Random question for timeline purposes. How long were the Eldrazi sealed away? Also, how much time was there between Ugin and Nicol Bolas throwing down, and their release?

dougbeyermtg:

The Eldrazi were originally trapped on Zendikar (by Sorin, Ugin, and the Lithomancer) about 6000 years ago.

Ugin and Nicol Bolas had their throwdown a long time after that, and a long time before now. More on that later.

I am very confused about what Sorin's deal is. On one hand bloodsucking vampire who seems to enjoy being kiiiiind of a jerk judging from his flavor text quotes. On the other hand he made an Arch Angel that protects the humans of Innistrad with the ultimate goal of keeping the vampires alive, and helped lock away the Eldrazi. Why does he care anyways? Is it something relating to his backstory that has not been revealed yet? Or am I just missing something?

dougbeyermtg:

I think you’ve basically understood Sorin, actually. His age (over 6000 years old) and planeswalker status give him a broad perspective, which means he sees the big picture on issues like human extinction on Innistrad and planar extinction, you might say, due to the Eldrazi. He can tell that those disasters would be bad for him and bad for everybody, and so he has intervened. But his age and power have also distanced him from the cares of individual mortal people. He’s a dimension-hopping millennia-old super-mage who drinks people’s blood out of their necks, so yeah, he’s pretty jerky. He’s moved past most traditional forms of morality, and doesn’t see the point of worrying about individual people anymore. Some individuals are hurt and even die because of Sorin’s actions, but to him that’s just below his radar of caring. Power and perspective give you the ability to make a great impact, but they can also cost you the ability to be sensitive to your lesser ones.

As a worldbuilder, what was your thoughts on Pandora in the movie Avatar?

Anonymous

dougbeyermtg:

Funny story:

After we had done tons of work on the world-building of Zendikar, ads for James Cameron’s Avatar started coming out.

"Um, guys, Pandora is a perilous adventure world with floating rocks and big helicopter shots and an ecosystem of fierce creatures. AND FLOATING WATERFALL ISLANDS. AND SIX-LEGGED THINGS, LIKE OUR BASILISKS. YOU GUYS."

"You think everyone is going to think Zendikar is a ripoff of Avatar?"

"WHEN ACTUALLY ZENDIKAR CAME FIRST."

"Or at least was developed independently, yeah."

"THIS IS TERRIBLE!"

"Maybe it’ll be fine. Coincidences happen. There are lots of differences too."

"THIS IS TERRIBLE WHAT IF PEOPLE DON’T LIKE ZENDIKAR WHAT IF THE MOVIE FLOPS WHAT IF JAMES CAMERON RUINS EVERYTHING AAAAA"

[[a couple of months pass]]

"EVERYBODY LIKES ZENDIKAR YAAAY"

"Also Avatar made a billion dollars. Good for James Cameron."

"Psshh. Whatever. Anyway, let’s get back to work on our sweet new Gothic horror setting. NOBODY’S MAKING ANY MOVIES ABOUT VAMPIRES, RIGHT?"

This one is for us, Zevran’s fans who are still sad about our favorite elf not appearing in Inquisition.

After the Inquisitor mets Hawke, it’s time to met the Hero of Ferelden, the one he heard so much about.

Leliana is there too, she greets her old friend. The war talk happens and the…
